Work on the Centralized Water Treatment Plant commenced on Thursday August 20, 2020, with construction taking just over two years to complete.

The Centralized Water Treatment Plant went online and started pushing soft water into the City's water system on Tuesday, November 15th, 2022. All customers should now be receiving soft water at their homes and businesses. 

The target for the new Water Treatment Plant is 90mg/L of hardness. This is about 5 grains of hardness per gallon. Before the new plant, the hardness of Robbinsdale’s water was about 409mg/L or about 24 grains of hardness per gallon.

Since the Centralized Water Treatment Plant went online, the project has been the recipient of multiple awards. Most recently, the Centralized Water Treatment Plant received acknowledgement through the American Public Works Association (APWA), with a prestigious National Project of the Year Award, in the Small Cities/Rural Communities - Environmental Category. This award marks the fourth time that the project has been professionally recognized, in addition to the following state-wide accolades:

• American Public Works Association (APWA), Minnesota Chapter: Project of the Year Award – Environmental Category 
• City Engineers Association of Minnesota (CEAM): Project of the Year Award (shown below)
• National Society of Professional Engineers, Minnesota Chapter: Project of the Year – Public Health Category

On October 16, 2023, the City hosted a Grand Opening for the Centralized Water Treatment Plant. The Grand Opening included a ribbon cutting, remarks from Public Works Director/City Engineer Richard McCoy and Mayor Bill Blonigan, and tours of the plant to over 150 guests, including residents, legislators, Council Members, and community members.

Contractors have completed the drilling of two replacement drinking wells. The wells are at a depth of about 300 feet below the ground. 

The new wells became operational with the new water treatment plant, meaning that the two existing wells in downtown were discontinued.  A third well, which had some operational challenges, was also retired.

The overall water infrastructure improvements included the construction of the new 750,000-gallon water tower located between West Broadway, County Road 81 and Highway 100. 

The new water tower officially went online in late-March, 2024. This was a historical moment for the City of Robbinsdale, as the old water tower downtown has now been retired from the water supply system after 86 years of service. The old tower near North Memorial is also now out of service after 68 years of operation to the community. Thank you for your patience during the transition.
